Standards

Avid was initially the ‘first out of the gate’ when semi-pro/professional non-linear video editing software emerged. Film industry people loved it because the Avid system was a serious system. And it cost a lot of money. (Hundreds of thousands of dollars) Which meant not everyone could afford to mix it with industry professionals.
Then Final Cut Pro came along and people other than film people loved it. It was a serious system but it didn’t cost the same as Avid.
Now I’m told FCP is passe and Premiere Pro is the new black. A media student was told this by his lecturer. Right there, the industry standard is being rewritten.
If enough people use a system then that becomes the norm, the standard. Until it becomes old hat and we start looking for the next new, shiny thing. Sometimes being an industry outsider is a good thing.
